Online Aid Applications

Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)

You’ve no doubt heard of this as it is the very first step on your search for federal financial aid. You’ll have to fill out one of these before you can apply for anything. Even scholarships and grants not connected to the government often require the FAFSA to be filled out first.

You can go to the website by clicking here http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/ to get started. You’ll want to first gather the documents you will need in order to complete the FAFSA. There is a list of needed documents on the website. You’ll need to apply for a PIN number to serve as your electronic signature or you can mail in a signature page.

You can print out a FAFSA worksheet so that you can fill out all the information before submitting it online. Then, once you’re ready to submit the information online, it will be a much smoother process. Just being able to fill it out online and submit the application speeds up the process considerably.

Types of Financial Aid

Although financial aid is plentiful as far as how many sources there are, most of the time it is nearly impossible to get enough financial aid from one source to pay for everything, unless of course, you receive a full scholarship.

Grants are the kind of financial aid that doesn’t have to be paid back. They differ from scholarships in that grants are need based only and scholarships can have different qualifying criteria including or excluding financial need.

There is always a wide array of available scholarships to apply for and many of these applications can be found online. One of the first places to look for a scholarship is at the school you plan to attend. Most colleges and universities have websites with online financial aid applications included. Community organizations are a great place to look for scholarships and many of these organizations have websites too. You can usually find either an application or financial aid information with contact information on these websites.

Almost every college and university has scholarships that come from endowments and/or alumni donations. Sometimes people leave a portion of their estate to the college or university they attended and then specify specific criteria that must be met in order for the scholarship to be awarded.

Student loans are becoming more and more common as tuition costs rise. In fact, many college graduates graduate owing thousands of dollars in student loans that will take many years to repay. The real key to the financial side of college is careful and early planning. If you do have to take out a student loan or even more than one, treat this as you would shopping for any other big-ticket item and do your homework and shop around to get the best terms.

Types of Scholarships

Anyone who truly wants to go to college can. Despite rising costs, there is enough financial aid, including scholarships, grants and loans for anyone to attend college. For optimum results though, you’ll have to do an enormous amount of work seeking out these opportunities and then applying for them in a timely manner. Once you find the scholarships you’re interested in, many of them will have a free online application that you can fill out and submit.

Scholarships come in all sizes with all kinds of criteria attached to them. When you first start looking for scholarships, look first to yourself and the rest will come. Ask yourself a series of questions and once you start following up on the answers, you’ll find that you have a full-time job just looking and applying for scholarships.

For example, what is it that you want to study? Nearly every field of study has scholarships set aside for them. Suppose you want to study computers. Microsoft and many others in the industry award thousands and thousands of dollars in scholarship money annually to deserving students.

Whether or not you think you are eligible, apply anyway. That is, unless you really know you won’t qualify. For example, many scholarships have a GPA that must be met in order to qualify. If the guidelines state that you must have a 3.5 GPA to qualify and you know you only have a 3.0 GPA then don’t waste your time or theirs. However, if you don’t think of yourself as poor, don’t let that stop you from applying as that decision can be reversed if you indeed qualify for financial aid.

The point is to cover all your bases. Are you a minority? How about the first one in your family to attend college? There are many state and geographical scholarships awarded to those who meet the basic criteria. Look around your community at the civic organizations and find out which ones are offering scholarships and then apply for as many as you feel you qualify.

Remember, if you are planning to attend a particular school or would like to, don’t forget to start your scholarship search there. Speak with the financial aid office and ask if they have a website. You’ll be able to go through a list of scholarships to see which ones you might qualify for and submit your free online application as soon as possible.

Financial Aid Websites

You’ll find online aid applications all over the Internet. Some of the scholarship search sites include www.fastweb.com, www.college.enotes.com and www.scholarships-ar-us.org. Once you perform a search and get back results for the kind of scholarships and financial aid you’re interested in, you’ll be able to go to the websites for the particular program you’re interested in and much of the time you’ll find an online financial aid application.
